How to Care for Pearl and Jade Jewelry
Jewelry becomes part of our daily lives. A few gentle habits help protect the materials, settings and threads that make each piece special.
Begin with a Simple Routine
Put jewelry on after applying perfume, cosmetics and lotions. Remove it before swimming, showering, exercise and household cleaning. Check clasps, settings and cords regularly; stop wearing a piece if anything feels loose.
Caring for Pearls
After wearing, wipe pearls gently with a clean, soft cloth. Keep them away from perfume, hairspray, cleaning products and abrasive surfaces. If needed, use a lightly damp cloth, then let the piece dry before putting it away. Avoid soaking strung pearl jewelry. Do not use steam or ultrasonic cleaners on pearls. If a necklace's thread stretches or frays, have it checked for restringing.
Caring for Jade: Nephrite and Jadeite
Protect jade from drops and strong knocks. For routine care, wipe with a soft cloth. When suitable for the complete piece, use a little mild soap and lukewarm water, rinse carefully and dry. Cords, glued components, mixed materials and treatments may require a different approach, so follow the individual product's guidance. Avoid harsh chemicals, steam and ultrasonic cleaning.
Caring for Metal Details
Solid gold, gold-filled, plated metal and sterling silver need different care. Check your listing before choosing a cleaner. Use a soft cloth for gentle cleaning; do not rub plated surfaces with abrasive polish. A silver polishing cloth may suit plain sterling silver, but keep polishing products away from pearls and other sensitive components.
Store Each Piece with Care
Keep pieces in separate soft pouches or compartments to reduce scratches and tangles. Allow damp jewelry to dry before storage. Protect pearls from excessive heat and very dry conditions. For pieces combining several materials, follow the gentlest care method required by any component.
