Nephrite and Jadeite: Two Expressions of Jade
Jade does not have just one appearance. It can feel quiet and understated, or full of color and light. Nephrite and jadeite are two distinct materials traditionally known as jade, each with its own character.
Nephrite: A Gentle Luster
Nephrite often has a soft, smooth-looking glow. Its colors include creamy white and shades of green. A simple polished pendant can invite us to notice the material itself: its subtle tones, curves and individual markings.
Jadeite: Color and Light
Jadeite offers a varied palette, including green, lavender, white and yellow. Some pieces transmit light beautifully; others have a more opaque appearance. A carving, a rounded bead or a simple disc can reveal different aspects of the stone.
Understanding the Difference
Nephrite and jadeite have different mineral compositions. Neither name alone tells you a piece's quality or value. Color, texture, translucency, craftsmanship, condition and any treatments all deserve attention. Photographs can help you appreciate a piece, but cannot establish its identity or treatment history.
Choosing a Piece for Yourself
Begin with what draws your eye. Consider the pendant's dimensions, the weight of earrings, the fit of a bracelet and how the piece will feel in everyday wear. Read the individual listing for the material, metal and included accessories. Natural variations are part of each piece's character.
A Note on Treatments
Treatments can affect appearance and care. Do not assume that every jade piece is untreated or independently certified. Check the specific listing for disclosures and available testing information, and ask us if you need clarification before choosing.
Enjoying Jade Over Time
Wear your jewelry thoughtfully, protect it from impacts and store pieces separately. With a little attention, the details that first attracted you can remain a source of everyday pleasure.
