Zhong Kui Guardian | Natural Black-Skin Nephrite Jade Seed Material Pendant
Zhong Kui — The Guardian Against Evil
One-of-a-Kind Black-Skin Nephrite Jade Carving | Collector’s Gallery
A striking carved pendant featuring Zhong Kui (钟馗), one of the best-known guardian figures in Chinese folklore. His wide eyes, commanding expression, and flowing features are carved into pale, softly luminous nephrite jade, while the contrasting dark brown-to-black natural outer skin wraps around the side and reverse. Each surface tells a different story of the stone.
The Legend of Zhong Kui, the Demon Queller
According to a popular Chinese legend, Zhong Kui was a remarkably learned scholar whose appearance prevented him from receiving the honor he deserved. After his death, his spirit became a powerful guardian against malicious spirits.
In another well-known telling, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty dreamed of a little ghost stealing his possessions. A fierce-looking figure appeared, seized the mischievous ghost, and identified himself as Zhong Kui. The emperor later ordered Zhong Kui’s image to be painted, helping establish him as a celebrated protector in Chinese folk tradition.
Over centuries, images of Zhong Kui have been displayed in homes and worn as protective talismans. He represents courage, integrity, the triumph of good over evil, and the wish for peace and safety.
A Symbolic Guardian to Carry With You
In traditional Chinese belief, wearing a Zhong Kui pendant expresses the hope of warding off negative influences and protecting the wearer from misfortune. It is a meaningful cultural symbol of inner strength, reassurance, and peace of mind—not a promise of supernatural protection.
Natural Contrast and Sculptural Character
The principal face is a warm ivory-to-pale-green color, featuring Zhong Kui’s expressive visage in raised relief. A dramatic dark natural-looking skin covers much of the reverse and one side, emphasizing the individual character of this seed-material jade. The softly rounded form is suspended on a burgundy woven cord with decorative brown and golden-toned beads, as pictured.
Its strong visual contrast, traditional subject, and sculptural presence make it a distinctive addition to a collection of Chinese jade art.
